Postdoctoral Fellow

University of Pennsylvania
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Michael Abt. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent, and collaborative scientist to study immune mechanisms supporting microbiome-based therapeutics to expand upon recent findings published by our group in Nature Communications (Littmann ER et. al. 2021). The position is federally supported by a recently awarded NIH-NIAID R01 grant. There are multiple translational and basic research projects available for consideration. The laboratory is a highly collaborative and supportive training environment in which successful candidates will be given the opportunity mentor and train junior lab members, develop new methodologies, and enhance professional development skills. Candidate’s responsibilities will include experimental design, execution, data analysis, data presentation, and manuscript preparation.

Lab Description:

The Abt lab is part of the Department of Microbiology, the Institute for Immunology, and the Center for Molecular Studies in Digestive and Liver Disease in the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. Our research group studies interactions between the host immune system and the intestinal microbiome. We explore immune-microbiome interactions in the context of infectious disease using the latest immunologic, microbiologic and next-generation sequencing technologies. More information on the Abt lab can be found at https://abtlab.med.upenn.edu/.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or MD/PhD degree with previous training in Immunology or Microbiology.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working both independently and in a collaborative environment.Desired Skills:• Prior laboratory experience with broad immunologic techniques such as multicolor flow cytometry, mouse disease models, intestinal tissue cell isolation, ex vivo primary cell culture.
  • Expertise with bioinformatics analysis of RNA-seq or bacterial DNA sequence datasets.
