Research Associate

George Washington University
Washington, DC

The interest of the laboratory is to understand autoimmune disease. To achieve that goal the laboratory is dedicated to the pathogenesis of Myasthenia Gravis. Our therapy development program spans preclinical programs, clinical trials, biomarker discovery, and basic research on the autoimmune process.

We work closely with the clinicians of the GW Medical Faculty Associates Myasthenia Gravis Center and investigators across the United States and the world in academics and industry. Linda L. Kusner, Ph.D. directs the laboratory and is Associate Professor of Pharmacology and Physiology. Our complementary expertise in appreciation of the inadequacy of present therapies and the challenges in linking animal to human studies, make for a powerful team in therapeutic development. We use rodent models, including transgenic mice, in assessment of experimentally acquired myasthenia gravis. We also perform human studies of circulating white blood cells, thymus, and serum. Some investigations are focused on biomarker discovery using miRNA profiling, and cytokine evaluation. A variety of methods are used including: immuno-fluorescent microscopy, ELISA, flow cytometry, qPCR, and behavioral assessments of animals.

  • The Department of Neurology is seeking a Research Associate with enthusiasm for the practice of science. Duties include:
  • Design, development and performance of advanced experimental assessment interrogating immune function in human samples and animal models. Experimental methods include but are not limited to splenic cell purification, PBMC purification, flow cytometry, proliferation assay, immune-fluorescent microscopy, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and tissue assessment
  • Train users in equipment operation and research techniques
  • Preparation of manuscripts for publication and assisting in grant applications
  • Assurance of safe lab practices and cleanliness

Minimum Qualifications: Qualified candidates will hold a master’s degree and 1 year of experience in a related discipline. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position.

Desired Qualifications: Excellent communication skills, master’s degree or higher in immunology or a related field, and at least 1 year of demonstrated experience in the lab techniques listed in the job description. The candidate is expected to work well as part of a team and have enthusiasm for the practice of science.

To apply, go to https://www.gwu.jobs/ and search for posting number R001298.
